Little Red Dots

New research led by MIT's Rohan Naidu suggests “little red dots” detected by the JWST are actually a novel astrophysical phenomenon called a "black hole star".

Dr. David M. Livingston is my colleague and co-host on Hotel Mars, and we're off to the beginning!

Well, near to it, thanks to extremely helpful research recently published in Nature. This is the peer-reviewed, top-of-the-pile science journal in Europe, comparable to Science magazine here in the US. The paper is entitled, “A gas-enshrouded red black hole at cosmic Dawn.”

That’s where we are: Cosmic Dawn. In the paper, they aren’t quite using the term of art that’s currently showing up everywhere in news reporting: the Black Hole Star.

We have one of the major discoverers behind this research with us today—a really good sport, Rohan Naidu of MIT. He is now a man who has to explain what a black hole star actually is. It almost seems like cheating to put together two great cosmic mysteries!
