The AI Optimist (with Keach Hagey)

WSJ reporter Keith Hagey discusses her new book about Sam Altman's journey from a charismatic teenager in St. Louis to the controversial CEO of OpenAI.

I welcome Keach Hagey, the author of The Optimist: Sam Altman, OpenAI, and the Race to Invent the Future.

I take us to a scene from Keach’s very careful reporting.

It’s January 4th, 2016 in San Francisco. Some of the principals of ChatGPT are gathered, having committed themselves to a document that's critical here, coauthored by Brockman and Sutskever. The document announces the launch of the OpenAI as a nonprofit research company backed by $1 billion in funding from Elon Musk. So we need to introduce the names here.

Who is Mr. Brockman? Who is Mr. Sutskever? And why did they need $1 billion in January of 2016?
