The Mysteries of Black Holes

MIT's Salvatore Vitale and Caitlin Plunkett join Hotel Mars to discuss gravitational waves, hierarchical merging, and the secrets hidden in spacetime.

This is Hotel Mars, Episode N.

Dr. David M. Livingston, Dr. Space of The Space Show, is here as my colleague and co-host.

Salvatore Vitale, professor at MIT and third-year PhD student Caitlin Plunkett have determined something fresh and revolutionary and logical about black holes. They're not all by themselves. They're not lonely monsters. They merge, and when they merge, they reveal secrets that were heretofore assumed but not proved till now.

But I need some fundamentals because I always have to remind myself, what is a black hole? What happens to it, and what is it about gravitational waves that gives you insight into black holes?
