It seems that there's an ideological divide that rears it's ugly head ever 50-60 years or so. We have have the push pull of southern slave owners who became the opposition to civil rights in the post civil war era and it's never settled business. Not after the civil war when reconstruction failed (we had better luck the Germans and Japanese after WWII), not with the rise of labor, or women's right to vote through FDR, the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960's with the death of MLK and now we have it with the ideological and genetic descendents of the south now making straw men out of the trans issue and immigration with the standard dog whistle politics and where we see Trump largely not challenged successfully buy the congress, judiciary or through law.

No country that I can think of did well going backwards, yet we have the cult of Trump believing that it can be done. I wonder what Leon Festinger(Identified cognitive dissonance by studying a cult) would have to say about this. George Carlin(social critic in the vein of Mencken and Twain) too. Both talked about situations like this and the latter warned us. It reminds me of the quote attributed to Sun Tzu, an evil man will burn down his country to rule over the ashes and here we are. This country is led by a grandiose and malignant narcissist pretty much unchecked.

Will we ever finish this business? Will America ever move forward and release the rotting corpse that keeps coming back to ruin this country, and what is good?

The only hope of saving this country is if the GOP gets routed in the midterms. If it doesn't happen, it's not going to end well. At that point, I can think of a few countries that look good. I never thought in my wildest dreams I would be saying that.
