We’re in the closing hours of the 2024 election. One thing about the United States of America is that it has frequent elections, so we don't get too fixed on any one result. In fact, I'd rather talk about the results of the 1940 election than the 2024.
However, Germanicus is here, and I'm going to take advantage of it.
Tiberius (AKA Joe Biden) and Cleopatra (AKA Kamala Harris) and the youngest of the Gracchi (Donald Trump) are finishing the campaign with lots of heated activity and travel, hopping through the swing states. But there are things to be said of their conduct throughout this campaign that would have some purchase here in the 1st century AD. We can recognize it.
Tiberius, for example, was a rascal. More than that, he turned loose the dogs of war on his own people after the Sejanus plot was exposed. And it didn't take a lot of intelligence to expose it; Sejanus was a fool. The Senate turned on him, and Tiberius ordered the execution of everybody who had ever spoken to Sejanus.
Mr. Biden does not in any fashion have that kind of authority, but he's capable of misconduct.
How should we read Mr. Biden's “accidental” use of the derogatory term “garbage” in an open mic conversation the other day? There have been various interpretations. One is that it was purposeful. Another is that he misspeaks often, and this was easily confused grammar. Another is that it just comes with the territory when people betray and abandon you, and his resentment is is human scale.
How did you read it, Germanicus?
